Hist. crit. notes:Born in Klagenfurt, Emmanuel Fohn (1881 – 1966) studied privately in Dachau before furthering his education at the Munich Academy. He later moved to Berlin where he studied under Lovis Corinth. For a time, he ran a painting school in Hamburg and, in the 1920s was a frequent visitor to Venice and Paris, where he enjoyed considerable success. After 1933, he lived in Rome for a decade before moving to Castelrotto/Kastelruth. By 1938, Fohn had amassed a considerable collection of 18th and 19th century Romantic art deemed undesirable (so-called degenerate art) and banned by the then Nazi authorities. Given its incompatibility with his own work, this would seem to confirm Fohn's appreciation of art in a broader sense. By the time he moved to South Tyrol in 1943, Fohn had laid the basis for a relationship with a younger generation of artists.
This undated picture of Bolzano shows a detail of the Eucharistinerkirche Church (Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament) as it was after World War II. It looks out at the Sarntal valley as far as the ruins of Rafenstein Castle with the Sarner Scharte col in the background. This exemplifies the way Fohn uses few but incisive brush strokes to create elegant compositions. (Markus Neuwirth, Moving between North and South, in: Art in the Provincial Council of South Tyrol, Bolzano/Bozen 2024, p. 161, 200-201)
