Hist. crit. notes:From the 1970s to the 1990s: postmodern tendencies, metaphorical vocabulary and experimentalism
[…] Silvana Zambanini is another artist who has been based in the Province of Bolzano since 1980, and whose highly charged aesthetic is replete with metaphorical allusions. Not confined only to painting, she also spans literary, performance and multimedia spheres. This can be seen in her painting “Treestrips Tec. M. Tela” (1987), which manifests an expressive burst of colours and quick, almost violent, brushstrokes, reminiscent of early post-war action painting. The work, however, does not draw attention to the act of painting itself which, albeit essential, primarily serves as a medium for channelling her feelings and emotions. The juxtaposition of viscous colours and rhythmic arrangement underscore her metaphors. Her predilection for mixed techniques and use of haptic effects on canvas are also noteworthy. Although some of Zambanini’s works reflect abstractionism-i.e. “Specchio d’acqua e notte” (Mirror of Water and Night, 1984), “Viaggio dei Petali” (Journey of the Petals, 1985) and “Treestrips”-, they never quite transcend the figurative, in that they are mainly focused on themes relating to the relationship between the individual and nature, and the musicality and sensuality of forms. In some of the collective projects in which the painter has participated, a similar discrepancy between lived reality, experienced reality and painted reality seems to predominate. […]
