Hist. crit. notes:Robert Scherer (* 1928) was born in Silandro, Val Venosta valley. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts under Albert Paris Gütersloh and Herbert Boeckl, Scherer graduated under the mentorship of Professor Christian Ludwig Martin, who specialised mainly in graphic art. Thanks to his connection with leading Venetian artistic glassblower and glass manufacturer Fucina degli Angeli from Murano, Scherer received numerous requests (from what is today South Tyrol) for frescoes and stained-glass windows. Besides his graphic artwork and paintings, he also participated in several international glass art exhibitions.
His 1984 print “Am Strand” (At the Beach) was Scherer's contribution to the “Rimpfmappe” portfolio, depicting disrobed females on one side of an open-ended frame. In certain places, their outlines are replicated, simulating movement. Another of Scherer's works hanging in the Provincial Council building includes an undated, but autographed zinc etching. A woman sits naked on a sofa, with the window open and a curtain blowing in the draft. Another naked female in the foreground is seated on the floor, clutching the knee of the other. Behind her is a male head. In his 1967 painting, “Stadt in der Bucht” (City in the Bay), Scherer uses broad, parallel brush strokes to add depth and movement to the sea [note from Alexandra Pan, Amt für Kultur: lake] and sky. The fruit in his 1968 still life is coloured with blues, reds and whites, combining a top view with that from the side. On another sheet, his energetic lines outline five acts in various positions.
