At the bottom left, a little above the bottom of the barrel, a faucet to draw off the wine. To the right of it is a small door closed with a metal bolt. The entire barrel is covered with boiled linseed oil.
Hist. crit. notes:This object is a "Stander", i.e. a large fermentation barrel with a capacity of 58 hl. This barrel is one of the largest objects from the collection of the South Tyrolean Wine Museum. In addition to its size, it impresses with its good overall condition. The door opening was necessary to clean the barrel: the fermented must was taken out and the worker crawled head first through the door into the fermentation barrel in order to be able to clean it from the inside. This work was not without danger, as fermentation gases could still be found inside the barrel. The door is kept small to guarantee the greatest possible density for the barrel.
