Hist. crit. notes:"Nur wenige Verse oder Wörter gehen aus Tom Phillips' Illustrationen von Dantes Inferno hervor. Der englische Künstler schafft für keines der vierunddreißig Canti ein anschauliches Bild von Dantes Erzählung, sehr wohl aber einen visuellen Kommentar zum einzelnen Canto, indem er ein wesentliches Element erfasst."
